In Judaism there are four classical understandings of the Bible (G-D’s word). The four are known together as the “PaRDeS”.
1. The Surface or Literal Meaning or “Peshat” (also P'shat, פשט)
2. A deeper truth or moral that the text hints or points to. Known as “Remez”.
3. An elucidation/illumination or clarification of the text. Known as “Derash”.
4. A secret/hidden meaning buried in the nuances of the Hebrew letter and words. Known as “Sod”.
